NEWCASTLE ALLEYCAT MAY 16TH 2011

Monday night saw the return of the alleycat to Newcastle, the first of 2011. The plan was simple, meet at the Tyne for 7pm, £2.50 fee to race, 6 checkpoints, 35 minutes to race, winner takes all. Each racer was given a manifest to document the locations of the checkpoints and the 4 digit code that was at each checkpoint, as they were unmanned they took abit of searching for at times.
Over a distance of roughly 10miles the checkpoints were as follows
- Sage (10 Points)
- Ride (Dentons) cycles (15 Points)
- Life Centre (15 Points)
- Leazes Park (20 Points)
- Armstrong Bridge (30 Points)
- Tanners Pub (10 Points)

With an extra 10 points up for grabs for the first rider back, the different weightings of each checkpoint and the ridiculous wind on Monday it was set to be a good'un.

So we set off, you may notice I'm not in this photo, not thinking I'd be able to get all checkpoints I tried my luck doing pretty much the reverse route to everyone else hoping that I'd get a tail wind the whole time.

The route was good, town was pretty empty so red lights/junctions weren't really an issue and my trick with the wind seemed to work, riders finished at the Tyne as follows

- Matt (+10 Points)

- Steve

- Tom (Me)

- Jun

- Mark

- Phil

- Barry (-10 Points late penalty)

And so it was results time. With everyone's points tallied up and £15 for the winner they came in as follows

1st Phil

2nd Tom (Me)

7th Mark

Just 15points, Ride cycles, came between me and Phil, with at least 5minutes between our finish times I probably should have gone for all 6 checkpoints. There's always next time though. TO THE PUB!

Rough google of the route comes out at 25.8miles, done in about 2hours with a break in Ponteland. The ride through Prestwick and Dinnington was definitely the highlight, winding roads with a slight downhill. Fast.

6 Years I've lived in Newcastle, skated Leam Lane skatepark countless times, yet this spot has gone completely unnoticed despite being a 2minute walk from the park. It is without doubt the the most fun I've had at a spot in a long time, it's got everything.

Went upto Scotland last weekend and amongst the drinking managed to hit the local park. NSF legend Jim Newrick came along to see what Edinburgh had in store for his two wheeler. Keith Allan was on the shralp, as well as every child in Scotland...

check Keith's B/S 360 into a bike; I dropped into a child on a BMX and accidently grabbed him by the throat to break my fall.

We rounded a good weekend off with a game of footie in the sun whilst Jim practiced his 'come to bed eyes'.

Me and Matty took a trip down to the wasteland yesterday to check on its state after the harsh winter. The majority of it seems ok, bag of cement couldn't go a miss though.

Street skating?

As the ground seemed to be the dry'est its been in weeks today was to involve the lesser seen winter rarity of street skating! The day started the same as pretty much every one has recently with Danijel Stankovic's part in 'In search for the miraculous'

And like any other morning Hopper was soon to be knocking at the door. The crew for the day was to be Hopps, Matty and myself

Decided to try our luck in the west end and hit up a 'hip' that Matty had eyed from his car some time ago, spot looked aright the owner having a tab outside was having none of it though. After driving round a few blocks of flats we stumbled upon this park.

Park had some pretty weird features like the quarter behind Hoppers little legs

Me and Mattys switch ollied it solely to boast to people in town that we'd switch ollied a rail.

As you can see, beyond Mattys mucky windscreen, it wasnt in the nicest of areas.

Stopped off to check out another spot, get sweets and fill up Matty's windscreen wiper fluid. Found Bish's impressively detailed script for his masters project.

Then Hopper came 'close to death' when mistaking the taste of summer fruits squash for petrol! Drama queen.

Once Hopper had recovered we continued our journey for new spots and found an absolute banger and from what the dog walkers were telling us, or telling us off for, its a brand new spot.

Filmed my first line since finishing Pigs in Wigs and Matty got one aswell whilst leaving abit of himself at the spot!

Then home where Hopper showed us his artistic ability, thats Matty SSBSTS down Hubba Hideout, and to watch the ODB documentary 'Dirty Thoughts'

Went for a ride round Jesmond Dene this morning to check out if the new road had been finished, it hasn't. As soon as I left the house I knew it was gonna be abit sketchy, super sunny and wet floor aren't ideal for being able to see where your going, why didn't I just wear sunglasses? Took a wrong turn, came back on myself, continued, took another corner..WHOOSH zipped out on my hip. Black ice strikes again! Continued my ride round the Dene anyway, plenty of big dogs and push chairs about, was a good loop just need to remember to NEVER LEAN!

This past weekend Newcastle was graced with the presence of Essex's finest skateboarders as part of ITV2's new series The only way is Essex. The crew consisted of Dirty Dave Vise, Sam, (Tom) Bell and Essex Tom who was making his comeback to skateboarding after a month out of action.
First port of call on Saturday was the Pigs in Wigs premier, the Deekies have already covered the premier so I'll get straight to the party. Tyne bar and Bell was trying his luck with the more 'mature' women, apparently this women was famous and it was a breath of fresh air for us to not know how famous she was? Was she actually the Ramones manager?

Sam was also on top form showing us how he managed to lure in his lucky women, then once lured the face that will haunt them for years to come.

Essex spent the night getting ale all over his 'tache and mysteriously loosing at pool, the mystery turned out to be Mr Thirtle who kept sneakily putting the balls down the pockets.

From then on the nights a blur of Gang signs and Cockney smiles

After spending a day on the sunbeds and getting vajazzle's the boys were ready to rip on Monday. Went down the coast to sample the delights of scooter free skateparks, Whitley bay and Meadowell.
Despite the seemingly endless amount of abuse Bell's body took he ripped the whole day.

Whittle's break seams to have paid off, landing tricks all over the shop. Yes Tom!

ROAD TO ROLLAPALUZA

Sunday just gone Newcastle held one of eight national qualifiers for Rollapaluza and it was amazing! Put simply you and your opponent strap yourself in to a set of bike and do as much damage as you can to your legs whilst covering a 500m distance.

First up was the qualifiers with the top 16 riders going through. Reaching speeds of well over 40mph every had there race face on!

Once through it was no longer fastest time that goes through it was a head to head knock out for the 8 places in the quarters. It was in this round that I got knocked out by Hugh Sherlock and swiftly took up my role as chief cheerleader and Matty went on to be the rider that everyone feared breaking the 23second barrier.

I'll cut away from the men's racing for a minute.

During the breaks in the men's heats the women were racing and with only 6women racing we were determined for Jo and Steff to make the GSH proud. With Joanne being knocked out in the semi's it all rested in Steff's shoulders in the finals and she did a sterling job finishing just 2seconds after the overall winner which let her take home the prized tshirt.

Back to the mens

Now into the quarters Matty really picked up the pace knocking out his contender by a clear 2seconds, unstobable? His next round proved a helluva lot harder with only 0.3 of a second between him and Matt with both of them riding sub23 times. The other semi's battle was between Ricky and Tristan

I think that this was actually the best fought ride of the night, neck and neck for the first 200m then Tristan crept in front but like the hero he is Ricky smashed the last 50m to take the win and his place in the finals.

Not content with with the distances they'd already covered the organisers raised the distance to 1km! Cant say the lads were too pleased though ,when asked "Matty you ready?" he simply replied "Fuck you!" the crowd loved it.

Now Im not saying that Matty's victory is solely down to his cheerleaders but when you've got Andy putting in so much effort that he takes over everyones face then you must be able to smell the victory, click here to see the full thing.

As soon as the race started Matty tore ahead not letting up his pace atall despite the distance, the gap grew to about 150m and the victory was his covering the 1km in just 52seconds!

As Matty won the whole event he has been invited down to London for the National finals going up against some of the uk's best. According to the guys there to even qualify in the first round Mattys gonna have to ride the hardest he rode on Sunday but then in the next rounds the speed is only going to increase so to overcome this Matty has enlisted me to be his 'trainer'. My aim is to transform his legs into these in 4months, no idea how Im gonna do that yet though.

Musette bags seem to getting a lot of coverage at the minute with the recent Spinwell bag along with all the ones you can expect from Le Tour so I set Steff, my girlfriend, the challenge to make me one. Measuring 40cm x 30cm made out of double layered cotton canvas it's a great for going out on little rides or poppin to the shops.

Folds down nice a small aswell so can easily fit in your pocket.

Nice and simple with wooden toggles to keep everything secure

Steff managed to find the same bed sheets that I used to have as a kid and lined the inside with them.

King of RAD!

On Saturday night me and Tom met one of our all time fav's, king of radical himself, Christian Stevenson.

Everyone remember's him from co presenting RAD and the groms tour, my favourite thing with him in though was the 2002 Vans No home comforts tour. Staring Ollie Todd, Dan Cates, Franklin Stephens, Mark Churchill, Howard Cooke along with many others with Christian as the man behind the camera and general "Get stoked" man it's an absolute treat. Matty Smith super birthday shred

It was Matty's birthday on Tuesday and to celebrate he's been having a week of celebrations. Im blogging the Wednesday and Thursday. First port of call on Wednesday was a sick bank spot round the corner from Adam's, what looked abit shit turned out to be a load of fun and the Pigs in Wigs footage started to clock up.

We moved on to the old college in Gateshead after that, there wasn't a great deal there and we ended up getting booted by a lovely security guard, he's lovely because he gave us 10minutes to film Matty's line, he got it.

As Matty had to sign on we headed to Cramlington to sample it's delights. First spot was the Aldi manny pad/ledge. Matty was on form and Adam was centimetres away from this crooked grind, he ended up binning it off and we traded places with Dan and Buster and just posed that shit.

The heat was beginning to get to us all so it was time for a few games of SKATE and a "workout".

After Aldi we moved on to yet another supermarket, this time Somerfield. Bish got a clip, look a the shapes he's pulling! We also got the pleasure of meeting a little pug aswell, Bish almost pissed himself with excitement.

After a quick pit stop at the Smith household we headed out skating again, yes at another supermarket Sainsbury's this time. Bish landed his first ever kickflip manny which completely blew my mind and Adam hammered it round the full car park to film a line.

Thursday morning got kicked off with Bish and Matty entertaining the neighbors with there aerial show on the trampoline. Not alot of skating got done this day as Thursday was bowling and party day, the theme for the days fun was The Big Lebowski.Adarisy showed up with his little fashion guide that could easily fit in his purse.XS superbowl in Benton fulfilled our bowling desires, Bish was overall victor winning 2 of the 3 games, I won the other.

After paying far too much for a Wimpy it was back to Bish's flat to watch The Big Lebowski and drown our body in Caucasians.

Ranson turned up after a while, Nicola's was pretty much over it by this point.

Then it was on to the cluurrrrrrrrb, Stonelove.

Matty, Adarisy and Ranson all stopped at mine, a decision that Adairsy' shin's would later regret.

KOTHM '05 Team Chutney

The year I started uni saw the first ever KOTHM. Barely knowing anyone in Newcastle me and, the now departed, Redcar Dan decided to set up our own team; it consisted of myself, Dan, Stu Fone, Bryce and of course Chutney. Struggling for a filmer Jackie recruited Chutney, who we'd never actually met, to be our filmer. During the weekend we got to find out quite how much of a professional filmer Chutney actually was, the fact he couldnt skate and film at the same time so had when filming a line so had to sit on his board and shuffle along the floor, that he brought out a half empty battery and that apparently he knew no spots. I cant complain though as we still managed to get a section filmed, a section that was mocked (well Bryce was) the next year by team dD (before dD existed) much to his amusement! Anyway I'll stop rambling, in the section you'll see some shonky slow mo tricks, Bryce's special move the kickflip fs noseslide and a single clip of Dan. Oh how I miss Dans constant bitterness to the world!

The LOOK AT THIS FUCKING HIPSTER book was released about a month ago and after being promised a complimentary copy I was beginning to think that it was never going to arrive, how wrong I was. This morning there was a knock at the door and the posty gave me this package, a package New York? I instantly got excited and ripped it open.I quickly scanned through the book hunting out the pictures of Tom I'd sent in. I only thought they were going to publish one but they ended up printing both. STOKED!

I'm even stoked on getting my name in the back. I'll be carrying the book round all week so give me a shout if you want a chuckle.

This bikes been parked on my street for the last few weeks, last week it had its saddle stolen (which got replace) then the other day I noticed that it's wheels had been stolen. When I went past the bike this morning I noticed that it had a sign on it. Nowt better for getting back at a thief by dooming there lives forever!

Friday night was Joanne's double denim party and it went down an absolute storm, even the hippest (read hipsterist) clubs in London couldnt top the amount of double denim that was going down.
Matty had two outfits for the night, the first being his nasa school uniform and the second the nasa party outfit, belter.Bish gave us all a sneak prevue of the outfit he's gonna wear for next years Britian Got talent.
